It is used because of the high iron content in the water.

Used because of the high iron content in my well water. That 5 micron seems to remove it just fine. I change about every 3 months. The last one was changed a bit early due to an earthquake (we live near Anchorage) that shook many wells in the area and caused dirty water to rise. I didn't notice any changes with the built-in filter.
