Review on Sony DVP-NS70H HDMI DVD Player, Single Disc by Kevin Apriando

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Not what I was hoping for.

I had really high hopes for him. But unfortunately I'm having the exact same video problem that others have reported. There is a 1 inch tape at the top of the picture and a ½ inch tape at the bottom. This happens every time I use HDMI and run at 720p or 1080i. This is definitely not the fault of my Panasonic 42" Plasma as it is not the case when receiving converted 1080i signals from my HD TIVO. Image information is not lost. Rather, the image (in height) is slightly flattened. Although everything looks great in 480p over HDMI. But if I'm using 480p, why spend the extra $80 to upconvert? Well, when I tried component outputs at 480p, the picture was noticeably worse. The image didn't look much different than the $29 CyberHome backup player I used before. There were a lot of dancing pixels ("mosquitoes") in some areas of the image. Now I'm not sure if I should just keep this for the HDMI output (at 480p) or try to find a cheaper device that can handle component outputs better. I'm really not sure what to do. long enough to read the disc the first time you insert it (sometimes up to 45 seconds!). Like most Sony remote controls, the remote control is uncluttered and easy to use. The player has many unexpected features that are nice but probably won't change my purchase decision (slideshow effects, lockable eject function so kids can't play around with it, etc.). So I recommend buying this from a place with a liberal return policy. If you can get it working with your monitor with no top/bottom black bars, it will be a great device.
