Review on Convenience Concepts Xtra Storage 1 Door Cabinet, Faux Birch: Organize and Add Style to Any Space by Raquel Ramirez

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good concept let down by poor quality control

At just over $30 they may seem like a steal. However, the quality remains below what you would expect even at such a low price. For less money (per cubic foot), the Foremost range of storage cubes here at Revain are much more affordable and far more versatile. So here are the pros and cons: Pros: The back panels are solid fiberboard, not regular cardboard. All panels except the thin back panels are laminated on both sides; that's rare in this price range. This has the benefit of giving you some flexibility in customizing these cubes; lower door as shown; door above; Stack them sideways, stack them as high as you like (though not without drilling and doweling). Cons: Particleboard is thinner than usual, but surprisingly hard and unyielding. That would actually be fine if they didn't tend to break under stress, in fact two of these cubes (I ordered four) had boards cracked or broken right out of the box. quality control is terrible; aside from the damaged boards (which frankly probably happened during shipping), there were a few chips and scratches that appeared to have only been touched up with a permanent marker. The so-called "chrome" handle is plastic, and the screw that attaches it to the door will chew through the threads if you're not careful. Half of the screws that hold the boards together aren't cutting properly because they're too short, or the pre-drilled holes are too wide, or just because it's chipboard and you shouldn't be using regular chipboard screws. Finally, the fit and finish is also disappointing; Edges are rough, sometimes jagged, and board orientation varied from box to box.

Pros
  • Easy to assemble
Cons
  • Out of style
