Solid and heavy, a nice upgrade from my last Kwikset. The smart key function is easy and convenient when you need to change the access key without buying new hardware (door handles/locks). With a clean install, a key is installed and ready. "Reset Key”: Insert key currently in use/allowing access to lock, turn key clockwise in horizontal direction, insert reset pin (feel or hear a slight click), remove reset pin, push out old key horizontally, insert new key horizontally (new key: think you already have a key on the keychain that you use for other doors that you don't want to change) - turn, check, done.** You should use the "old key" to unlock the Set new key - the old key is the key that the lock is currently using, so it could be a new key "out of the box" or if the device was "reinstalled". Furnished'. (Imagine a renter moves out and needs to be reinstalled for the new renter - you need the old renter key so you can install/secure the lock for the new renter :) ** Kwikset lives up to their lifetime warranty - I had a fancy handle Over the years they have given me problems, called them and they shipped parts over - I saved almost $200! Well done Kwikset! If you're buying hardware (oh I feel your pain, it's expensive), just spend a little and make sure it has a "smart key" feature so you never buy new hardware because of lost keys have to. and Kwikset does a nice job of backing up their warranty by explaining problems, but they're not very good at letting you know they have pictures of problems, shipping info, or just we got you covered. but they sent my replacement after a few weeks.
