When we first used the bassinet with our newborn, it was a few weeks before I realized we had forgotten to put on a bed sheet. The mattress itself was fine so we never had to use it. My son's diapers hardly leaked at first so we didn't have to worry about tossing the sheet in the wash. For others, I could see why this might be necessary. But for the price it was a waste of money for us.
