I have an 'old' home theater system that sounds great. It offers plenty of inputs, but predates HDMI. Most of my video equipment currently uses HDMI. I didn't want to spend money replacing audio equipment so this device solves my problem. It offers an optical output that I can connect to my home theater system. The S/PDIF output signal depends on the signal source. You can get either uncompressed stereo or compressed 5.1 or 7.1 channels. My particular home theater system is set to 5.1 channels. Because my TV has an HDMI output. I don't have to worry about switching multiple HDMI inputs. This works very well for my application.
