Review on ASTRO Gaming A50 Wireless Dolby Headset Computer Accessories & Peripherals by Karen Rivas

Needs frequent troubleshooting

I really need a wireless headset that I can use for gaming and general media use and that will last a long time. I had some friends who recommended the A50 to me, so I bought it. I've used it intermittently over the last three years, although I had it in the box for most of 2020 while using an old wired set. I packed them because I was very frustrated with having to babysit all the time. Installing it securely in your charger can be a nightmare. I felt my set had ONE sweet spot and a 1/4mm offset would make the difference between charging or expensive headphones. 2. Strange network connection. I often had to tune the channel to a channel below 100, and even then I often had to reconnect.3. The sound disappeared a lot for no apparent reason. Daily. During use, it was always clear to me that at some point I would have to restart, re-pair, re-pair, re-configure. Sometimes this was fixed by rotating the head or tilting it to one side or the other. I envisioned the wireless signal from the router to the headset as a broken filament, and this slow tilt allows the broken ends to reconnect around the tiny bit of dust that broke the connection. Unfortunately, the power of my imagination could not solve this problem. I ended up suspecting a faulty hardware connection or something that was taking a long time to resolve because I was waving it around so much during the troubleshooting above. The microphone was terrible. On Discord and Teamspeak, friends always tell me it shuts down, they can't hear me, is the fan running in the background? was i on the train it rained? etc. etc. That's the main reason I chose a wired headset: it's not much fun playing with friends if I can't TALK to any of them.5. When everything worked the sound was great. The headset was comfortable.6. I could return it, but I live in the countryside, rarely go to the city where I could find a pick-up point, and I refused to force a poor driver to come to my house to pick it up.7. Getting up and down all the time to fix problems with my headset reduced my concerns about developing a DVT from sitting too long! While I cannot recommend this headset, I find that other people have been fortunate to have had no issues at all. So, as with everything else in life, weigh the pros and cons and make the best decision possible.

Pros
  • regular price
Cons
  • too dumb
