The support needs to be at least 1-1/8 " in diameter.
Sturdy and well built. The mount is larger than I need for a small monitor. It needs to hold things that are much larger. Attached are a few photos so you can see how large a rod can be. If the rod is less than 1-1/8" in diameter I would say it is too large and unable to to clamp them. 1-3/4" seems to be the maximum size you can fit.
