Easy to use: Measuring and marking tools

If you are used to measuring distances with a tape measure or ruler - and especially if you have to do it unaided - you will love this rangefinder. It's lightweight, perfect size, quick and easy to use. You just put in the batteries (they're included), turn it on, point it at something and press the red 'measure' button and it instantly reads the distance. You'll see a glowing red dot on the wall (or wherever you're pointing at it) showing you exactly where it's based. You can also point it at something and press the Volume button to see the volume of the object. It also performs more complex calculations when you need it. You can press one button to put it in Pythagorean mode, or you can set up two separate distances to use independently with the stake out feature. It also has other functions. It comes with a pocket manual, but you can go online and download a PDF version. Just go to Extech.com, click on Products, then on Distance Finder, then on the model number "Extech DT40M". This will take you to a screen with a large photo of your meter. Below the photo you will see 3 tabs; the third is "Downloads". You can download the PDF here, which is great because you can instantly search for what you're looking for instead of flipping through a pocket guide. One thing I changed is the unit of measure. It was set to meters and I changed it to feet. Why not yards you ask? Because the only two options I could offer were meters and feet. I took off a star for that because when I measure something in 100 yards I don't want to get a calculation in feet and have to figure out how many yards it is manually. I also think it's a great gauge if you understand that there are certain surfaces that affect the accuracy of the measurement. Slightly shiny surfaces, such as mirrors, will not work. I liked the fact that there is a rubber grip behind the buttons to make it easier to hold, and it also comes with a carrying case and wrist strap so you can quickly attach it to your wrist when carrying other items. It really is the perfect size for what it does, so it's easy to hold and the keys are easy to press (and not cluttered); Even people with thumbs shouldn't have a problem with it. I love it and also appreciate that the Extech website has support if you need it. Great tool!
