Review on MikroTik RBcAPGi-5acD2nD-US: High-performance Dual-Band 802.11ac Access Point by Chris Crawford

Not strong enough

I bought one of these for testing purposes, hoping to use 2 additional units if my testing of the first one goes well. Step 1: Replace Netgear Nighthawk with device 1 in hotspot mode. Step 2: Extend WiFi to indoor and outdoor areas with 2 additional hotspots. My criterion for success was whether a device could replace my existing Netgear Nighthawk in AP mode without losing the Nighthawk's coverage. Unfortunately, cAP ac cannot meet this requirement. When testing the unit in the same location as my Nighthawk, the cAP AC signal could not go up or down the level. If I can't cover my 1300 sqm. Feet with a single access point, it doesn't cost money. I don't want to have 2 or 3 hotspots covering my house and then add 2 more. By all accounts the device should provide a stronger signal and faster speeds than I can get even when testing my wireless device within a few feet of the device. Mobile phones cannot connect to the Internet when connected to this device. The devices support a WiFi connection, but no internet connection is provided, so the devices miss many notifications. I have been working with Mikrotek equipment for several years now and am familiar with the manual setup required. I'm generally quite happy with Mikrotek products and using them in production systems, but I feel this product falls short of expectations. I will still consider Mikrotek products if I decide to buy again.
