We have no air conditioning or heating. We have a Hepa based air purifier at home. However, a way had to be found to filter the air entering the house. In this way you relieve the rather expensive HEPA filter and can breathe better air, even if it has not yet hit the HEPA filter. I ended up designing an inexpensive 4 piece filter system that attaches to a window and circulates filtered air throughout the house. The system consists of a replaceable screen material that filters out dust, pollen, etc. (PollenTec® Air Cleaning Window Mesh (21)."x 10`)), this activated carbon filter, oven filter (15x25x4 Exact MERV 15 AC oven filter quantity 2) and a standard 20" fan (Lasko #3720 20" Weatherproof Case Fan). The idea is that the PollenTec screen is the first line of defense, trapping dirt, dust, pollen etc before those particles even get into the house Reach and enter the main filter. The charcoal filter is attached to the oven filter in such a way that the air goes through the charcoal oven filter and then through the oven filter. The Nordic Pure oven filter I use is the closest thing to a HEPA filter. These oven filters are classified by particle size rated that they record, known as MERV (Minimum Efficiency.Reported Value). My research has shown that a MERV rating of 13 would be quite effective, but I found the M ERV 15 filter on Revain and it'll catch even more baddies (although the higher you go in MERV, the harder the fan has to run to let air through). However, stove filters don't trap gases like campfire smoke, so this is where a charcoal filter comes in handy. three filters. First I removed the existing mesh from the window where the rig will be placed and installed the PollenTec mesh in its place. If you've ever replaced a screen on a window or door with a screen before you know what that means. It's not too difficult a job, and having one of those little rollers (New York Wire 90611 2 Wheel Wood Handle Screen Tool) pushing the wedges into the groove that holds the screen helps a lot. I didn't have such a tool handy, so I used a mini screwdriver. But that's just me. I recommend getting a tool because either tools fly or tears shed when you set the new screen to 90% and then shoved a screwdriver through and ripped your whole new screen (I've never experienced any reactions of course, but I heard it's possible). I then attached the charcoal filter to the oven filter. I just cut the charcoal filter to fit the oven box filter and tape it in place. It worked like clockwork. Then I placed a two-component filter against the window opening and taped it in place. Here you can fantasize about how to attach the filter to the hole, but again I found masking tape was sufficient for my situation (see photo). You want to pick the furnace filter that works best for the hole, and then be ready to use cardboard, rubber, or whatever to fill in any gaps. Now you need to attach the fan to the filter. How much effort is required for this depends, of course, on the properties of the selected window. One option is to attach the two-piece filter directly to the fan and then insert the fan into the window. What you need to achieve is a tight enough seal between the fan and the filter so that when the fan is on the fan only draws in air from outside the building. Due to the high MERV rating, the fan MUST seal the furnace filter well to draw air through it. The entire job took about three hours and cost less than $200. Compare this to installing a professional solution. Did it work? Yes! The only modification here is to connect an AC rheostat to further reduce fan speed and therefore noise. My theory is that as long as you're getting airflow, you're creating positive pressure at that point in the house, forcing the old air out through other vents.
