A bit noisy but stutters well on first use. Update: Well I discovered a nasty secret after making jerky a few times. I've used very lean meat with very few drips, and even then the machine sucks in all the drips. There is no rim preventing the juice from going straight into the machine and because of the way the pressure works it acts like a vacuum and sucks in the juice. I've attached a photo of the underside of the sump and motor - the juice dripped underneath, sucked into the fan and splattered all over the boards. The whole thing almost caught fire and filled my house with smoke. No juices could drip directly into the center hole as I kept the meat 1-2 inches from the center and edges of the shells. It's not just unsanitary. This is a huge fire hazard!
