I have a rug that is the right size for my needs. It turned out to be a good decision. I was surprised that the mat was sticky at the top and bottom. That's why it didn't slide and the sticky top didn't make the dough more sticky, the dough was less sticky. I think you need a mat if using a scraper, but I don't have any surface that can't be damaged by something sharp. I was concerned about the straight line of the scraper handle, so I went with a curved top scraper as well. I like the curved scraper for handling dough, but the straight handle makes it the best choice for separating dough into rolls or loaves. I like to pick up the rug to throw excess flour in the trash when I'm done and I like being able to take the rug to the sink and easily rinse it out. I am a hobby baker and this purchase was a good idea for me. Very useful tools.
