It's made of 97% polyester and 3% cotton, in a tight weave to prevent the sun shining through. This would make for a 'hot hat', except that there is a web panel on each side for breathing. The adjustment in the back has a plastic snap device that holds securely.This cap isn't 'structured', meaning it has no stiffener to hold its shape, and that's what allows it to fold flat for storage. But it also means it has a somewhat collapsed look, which some people don't mind. I personally prefer a cap that holds its shape, but this is a reasonable compromise for its purpose, which is to protect the head from the sun's UV rays. Some may also find the bill to be a bit large, but that also allows it to provide more shade for the face.I have no way to confirm the claim that the cap provides UPF 50+ sun protection, but for a convenient and inexpensive way to carry a cap and shade your head form the sun's damaging rays, it appears to do its job.
