For those who thought they were just using an unamplified headset

My job requires long phone calls but I don't pay for headsets. Not wanting to buy a complete system, I figured that since the S10 headset has an RJ11 jack, I could just swap the handset on my phone for a headset and not buy a complete system. It worked. On the plus side, the headset was comfortable and I heard just as well as if I were using a handset. It also allowed me to type on the computer, take notes, or do whatever without feeling the pain in my neck when squeezing the phone between my head and shoulder. The Bad: The mic's boom only reached my cheek and wasn't very close to my mouth, so people on the other end of the line said I was coming in quietly and that I had to speak up (which then started to annoy my colleagues in the office). ). I think that's why you need an amplifier block (I'm assuming the amplifier is for both input and output). Since I switched handsets but still needed the handset to hang up, my phone calls were: 1) put on the headset if it wasn't already on, 2) pick up the handset, 3) talk on the phone, 4) pick up the phone , 5) reach for the headset when I leave the table. I'm a get up and walk person so I put my headset on and off all the time. Also initially there were several times when I picked up the disconnected handset and started answering the call but quickly resolved this issue. In the end I decided I liked the headset concept and had to buy the whole system (S12 or S22 replaced/replaced S10). The S12 headset's stem is longer so it's closer to your mouth, and since you're plugging the receiver into an amplifier box, you can easily switch between the two without having to unplug anything. However, if you're going the cheap route, this could be the solution for you.

Pros
  • Pretty impressive
Cons
  • boring packaging
