Review on πŸ”‹ Sony BC-TRW Battery Charger - Optimal W Series Rechargeable Battery Charger by Mike Bucher

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good charger... with an oddity

This is the charger that Sony should have bundled with the new a7 and a7r. Very simple and good at what it does with two small things to note. First, the progress indicators are a plus. I hate chargers that only show a red and a green LED. I love chargers that show how charged they are and how much remains to be charged, so thanks to Sony for including three LEDs to show progress. is on and the "Charging" LED is off ... the battery is NOT fully charged. For a really FULLY charged battery you have to leave the battery in the charger for another hour! So there is a secret bonus load level that you can only find out by reading the instructions. I have no idea that last ten percent charge makes a huge difference in battery life, but I find it odd that they design the charger to appear like it's fully charged when it isn't. My only other nitpick is that there is no car charger cable, just an outlet. It's okay, but it doesn't hurt to have options, especially given the fragility of these batteries. Overall it does what it's supposed to do, but not as fast (220 minutes from dead battery to almost full charge and another 60 minutes to FULL charge). Not bad, but not the super slick, well designed, and super fast charger I was hoping for. There are cheaper chargers here at Revain that charge faster, but what I bought (Maximal Power FC500) has little plastic wings the battery is just waiting to be ripped off and no progress indicators. . There are always compromises!

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Some complications
