NOT stainless steel, NOT what you would expect from Leatherman

I'll start this review by saying that I like the tool myself. It fits in my pocket, it's durable, it's a tool for all occasions. Where I draw my problem is in Materials. Let's examine that. In short, it's NOT stainless steel, and if it is, it's cheaper stainless steel. I haven't used this thing much, but I like it when I actually get it. In doing so, I made the mistake of using one of the smaller stock drives to adjust the sprinkler heads, resulting in the tool getting visibly wet. That's Leatherman, it's stainless steel I thought. After the job was done, I shrugged it off and put it in my pocket. This is where it gets interesting. The next day I go back to the driver and notice something dark on the file/saw. It's rust. What to Expect Does a "stainless" tool rust? I have never used a file. Looking around the rest of the instrument, I discover more spots. Surely the materials of the tools are some kind of stainless steel and have lower oxidation resistance, right? Be that as it may, nothing is perfect. It's probably a marketing gimmick if it's just a stainless steel body so they can claim that in the title. Only here they were far from perfect. Looking for more rust, I also notice it on the frame. Well, that's not good. What kind of stainless steel is that? I brought the tool to my bowl with the magnetic screw and in fact the whole tool was firmly attached to the bowl. If you know anything about good chrome steel, you know magnets shouldn't stick to it; The same magnet does not stick to my really rust-free thermos. In case you were wondering, it stuck to both the instruments and the case so the entire instrument isn't even what you might call "rust resistant" let alone "stainless steel". I've known for a long time that "Made in the USA" is just a marketing ploy to trick people into thinking the product is in some way better, but it's just completely false advertising. I've had my swiss multi tool for 9 years, I've even taken it under water to fix the pool but there isn't a single stain on it despite years of abuse. Leather Man has always been a shining example of a company, even beyond Victoianox, that makes quality instruments and I was dying to own one someday. That day has come and I am disappointed in this case. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I think you're paying $30 for a good tool and $50 for a brand name. It's annoying. TL,DR: Not stainless steel, rust will form even on unused tools if they get even slightly wet, the entire assembly is magnetic.

Pros
  • Inspires confidence
Cons
  • I vaguely remember
