Little compression compared to similar cubes

Comparison: Taskin airX 4pack (2L + 2S) Gonex compression packs (4pcs, four different sizes) Triped white and green set of 6 I was looking for the perfect set of packing cubes for the upcoming trip for my Farpoint Osprey 40L bag. As above, I tested the dice in hopes of comparing and keeping the best set for me. Priorities: compression, fit in a pocket, easy organization, durability. First of all, looking at these cubes, they open up all around the pocket, which is excellent. to see the items inside (although you can't see it when the bag is closed, like some bags with a mesh lid). They are incredibly light. They have a smaller top handle than the other three cubes I tried above. This grip looks more like a carabiner loop than anything else. Workmanship and materials seem to be good. Really not worth commenting on. In terms of compression, I tested a cube in a set and packaged it in: a pair of pants, 4 short sleeve shirts, 3 pairs of boxer shorts and a set of training shorts. The pants were tri-folded and the rest of the stuff was folded (FYI, not something I would take on a trip just to check). With the bag closed and the items in the bag, it was 4.5 inches. I squeezed while sitting on the bag and zipped the outside. With this method, the bag shrank to 4 inches so there was virtually no compression and the bag retained its cube shape with no bulging on the outside. This compression ratio is much worse than the other three cubes. Gonex 4pcs (4" -> 3-3.5" ), Taskin AirX (4-4.5" -> 3" ) and compression with shutdown (4" to 3-3.5" depending on the measurement location). Of course, I used all the bags of roughly the same size and packed them with the same items. Lightning is unlikely to get stuck under compression, but that's because there's little to no compression. This bag is designed more for those who want to separate clean and dirty clothes than for compression and space saving purposes. Because of this I think premium materials aren't even necessary as all the basic bags are pretty good and come in bulk for the same price. Overall, in case you're wondering, I went with the Taskin AirX because of its mesh viewing capabilities, a similar level of compression, zip quality (YKK), and a plastic insert along the zip that keeps the compression from binding. Hope this helps someone shopping!

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Poorly thought out
