If you have VHS tapes and want to convert them to DVD, this device is the all-in-one solution for you. For years I had a stack of camcorder tapes that I wanted to burn to DVD. It always seemed too intimidating - I needed a DVD burner, a FireWire interface, an analog to digital converter, etc. HP offers a DC5000 DVD movie burner that not only burns video on a PC, but also provides editing tools and then burn DVD. Since it is an external device, all you have to do is plug the device into the wall socket and then into the USB 2.0 port on your computer. I was a bit nervous after reading the reviews of the previous generation DC4000 product. So far the DC-5000 has worked well for me. My experience with 512MB of RAM and a 2GHz Celeron processor. Pay attention to the system requirements. Recording videos is very CPU intensive. Using less memory or CPU than recommended can cause problems. The software offers a basic HP mode as well as a fairly complete ArcSoft program. With ArcSoft I was able to create a beautiful DVD with chapters and titles. I've used video editing software in the past, so it was pretty easy for me to get used to ArcSoft and create cool effects and transitions. If you're new to this, you don't have a printed ArcSoft program guide, and this may seem like a stumbling block to these new time-based editing tools. All in all it's a great device and has helped me achieve my goal of converting camcorder tapes into a more readable format.
