Now that your Raspberry Pi 4 can boot from an external USB drive, it makes sense to replace your SD card with an inexpensive SSD. Topesel works exactly as I had hoped. Connected to one of the USB 3.0 ports via the supplied cable, it requires no additional power, is very fast and yet reliable. All of this for less than $40. The drive is solidly built and smaller than an RPi, so I now have a small, fast, reliable, low-power home automation server.
