UPDATE: I discovered if you push on the hinge they open fine. I must have been reallu tired to have thought that the round lip was the only way to open. I brew kombucha, use these for second ferment and have not had an issue with explosions. Great bottles!About the same as other bottles I have bought, great for carbonated drinks, HOWEVER, the reason one star is taken off--They are super hard to open. I had to use a spoon handle to pry it up. The metal flip part is super tight against the bottle. I have not had this issue with other bottles. I have old lady hands and opening this shouldn't break nails or finger tips. There needs to be a small gap on the sides so they can be opened without a tool.
