The information on the packaging states that a 9 volt battery is included. The battery was missing and the packaging wasn't sealed so I think it was probably a return. I don't think there is anything wrong with the scale. I went to the store, bought the battery I needed and installed it, then checked everything and everything seemed fine. But I only received the device today, so time will tell how it works. I have a job I'll be doing sometime this week where I need a scale to measure the amount of freon I'm putting into the system.
