Review on Galanz GSWWA16BKSA10 SpeedWave Convection Combi Speed by Chris Bertoli

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I don't regret buying it

An update on my previous 1 star review which you couldn't see because it doesn't seem to have been published: I decided to open the badly damaged box. The styrofoam was deep enough to keep the oven intact, but the air fryer kit had scratches on the non-stick coating. Revain offered a partial refund so I could purchase a new set. The alternative would be to return the entire device to a pickup point 30 miles away, so I took the money. The kit doesn't seem to be available individually yet and I'm not sure I believe the Revain rep who assured me that any older kit would be compatible so I contacted Galanz. In the meantime, you can use it because the scratches are on the outside where the food won't touch them. The gadget itself is great. Using the recommended spacing, you'll need just over 20 inches high and 26 inches wide. The motor means it doesn't slide all the way back, so you need about 21 inches front-to-back so the handle doesn't protrude over the counter. The fact that it has a handle was important to me in my purchasing decision as I don't like the release doors that many microwaves now have. It's pretty easy to use, just select a cooking mode, press the knob, turn the knob to the time and press to start. There are also preinstalled programs if you want to eat what they want to program, and they have a cheat sheet sticker so you don't have to memorize them or keep looking for them. However, the code sticker has small white print on a black and red background and requires reading glasses and a headlight to read, so I just set my own temperature and time values. Bake, roast, fry, microwave, convection, and convection/microwave buttons. He's not talking about toast, but since the item is up I'm pretty sure he'll be toasting the bread with the fry set. I should probably explain that I didn't buy this because I love to cook. I love to eat and bought this to make cooking less of a chore for one person. I thought 'bake', 'convection' and 'fry' were interchangeable words, and I haven't fried anything in a couple of decades. I wanted to see the difference between the cooking modes, so I decided to cook and compare the same dish in all ways. What can you roast, bake, fry or heat? convection is a verb? Anyway, the answer is chicken. I decided to cook each chicken quarter separately from a large bag to see the difference between the cooking modes. Airfryer: I soaked the chicken in egg and breaded it, then set the Airfryer on for 25 minutes. It was a set-and-forget process—no need to stand over the pan and dodge grease splatters. It came out perfect - crispy on the outside, cooked on the inside, encased in juice. Cleaning was easy as there was no grease to dispose of. i will do it again Convection Oven: The chicken came out slightly crispy on the outside, baked on the inside. It was a little less crispy than in Airfryer mode, but I suspect that's a feature of the Airfryer kit that allows for more airflow and no breading, not the oven itself. The convection/microwave combo: I loved it. Try these. Results - uh. It wasn't as brown and crispy on the outside as it would be if it was convection or deep fried. The texture was good for a microwave, but not as good as a deep fryer or convection. If you were in a hurry and willing to sacrifice quality for speed like I often do, you wouldn't be using this anyway as it takes just as long to cook as convection cooking. Roast and Bake: I think I was right. There's little to no difference in these settings other than the oven not heating up when I press roast until it beeps so I can add food. So if you don't want to wait for the preheater to put your food in, you can use the fry function. Microwave: I've used the microwave for oatmeal and to reheat chicken. It works like a microwave. So I needed a new microwave, and it fits the bill. High marks for Airfryer and convection features except for the damaged Airfryer kit. The bake/roast function is no better or worse than my regular oven, but at least it's not heating up the whole kitchen this summer. There are many pre-programmed options that I won't use, so they don't count. I'm still a bit frustrated with the condition of the box when it landed on my porch - it looked like it could literally land there, but the device was protected with foam on the inside. Four stars.

Pros
  • Pretty impressive
Cons
  • boring packaging
