Review on ๐Ÿ’ช Emtec X200 Power Plus 256GB mSATA SSD - Reliable Portable Solid State Drive by Masud Taylor

Revainrating 3 out of 5

A serious contender is external SSDs

While the SSD space is dominated by big players like Samsung, Western Digital (through the SanDisk acquisition), and Kingston, you really need to keep your eyes peeled if you're looking for other lesser ones -well-known players who offer good value for money. Emtec, a company with a better known brand in Europe, stands out. Pros: - Full capacity 512GB (not 480GB or 500GB) - USB-C interface - makes it useful for both Mac and Windows computers. - Really compact size (see ) - Uses SanDisk 3D NAND Flash (yes, I couldn't resist opening the device!) - Uses Silicon Motion SM2258XT - a renowned and leading brand in SSD NAND Flash controllers - Produced by Crucial and other well-known OEMs. .- Uses JMicron (another well-known Taiwan silicon company) USB 3.1gen1 Bridge to SATA 6Gbps Bridge- Above average transfer speed! NTFS formatted - not the best choice for Macs - No strap, no key chain hook (small things are better protected that way!) - Red strap looks like a cheap alternative to a zip tie - doesn't really add to the look or utility My original has that impression that it will be a keeper - especially after figuring out what the heart of this SSD does. It will replace or complement my favorite Samsung (MUF-128BA/AM) 128GB USB 3.0 (metal strip) flash drive without worrying about data loss or sudden crashes (which are very common with lesser known brands happen). Based on my personal experience I would prefer "Made in Taiwan" material rather than where most electronics are made at any given time and this little guy is from Taiwan. So far, so good. I'll update my review if there's anything new (or if I find a better use for the red bar).

Pros
  • Dope
Cons
  • Expensive
