Review on StarTech PCI Express Gigabit Network Adapter by Terry Napoleon

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great transfer speed with my QNAP NAS!

I bought an Intel 10GbE X540-T2 network card on eBay on July 15th. He started walking towards me. It was shutting down at random times and the only way to fix it is to restart your computer. I didn't realize the item I bought was probably a gray market item as it was a few hundred dollars cheaper and didn't have a "Yottamark" sticker. So I went ahead and bought this StarTech 10 Gigabit Ethernet NIC. (ST10000SPEX) to replace my Intel X540-T2. This time I bought it directly from Revain so I know it's a genuine StarTech product. Ethernet drivers by scanning the CD drive and installing the drivers. Went like clockwork! I am using this StarTech 10GbE NIC with Windows 10 and the drivers were NOT automatically installed. It's a good thing that a CD with drivers is included in the scope of delivery. I also use this StarTech 10GbE network card in combination with my QNAP TS-563 NAS server, which also has a 10GbE port. This allows me to transfer files back and forth faster than the standard 1GB speed! If you want to increase the data transfer speed between your computer and the NAS, don't forget to go to Windows, configure this NIC and enable Jumbo Frames! I installed 9014. Works like a charm! (You also need to make sure you enable Jumbo Frames on your QNAP server.) I can transfer large files to my NAS at around 280MB/s! Much faster than the standard 100MB/s I would get with a 1GB NIC card! Network Connections2. Right click on the StarTech NIC, go to Properties3. Click Setup4. Click the Advanced tab5. Locate Jumbo Frames in the Properties box on the left6. Change the value on the right to 9014.7. Watch your NAS data transfer speed increase! This is only the first day of using the card. I will come back and update my review if anything happens later in the future.
