First people complain about the white film in the water which is sure to be present when first installed (even after priming). I've been using them for about two years and no matter how much you fill them up, it's always going to happen. I have a Royal Berkey and have to run 4 full water filters through it before it goes away. My city has high levels of fluoride in the water, so I use these filters to lower the fluoride levels in my kids' drinking water so they don't get stained teeth from the drinking water. It occurred to me that maybe I should change them more often because of the high fluoride levels and the Berka customer service representative told me that it was NOT the case and that the fluoride level didn't matter. It didn't make sense to me, so I tested the water: once from the tap, once from filters that were 5 months old (btw, a support rep told me to change them after 8 months because of our usage level). ) and finally from a set of new filters cleaned of white dirt. The results showed that our tap water was 2.5 (it should be below 2 to avoid damaging children's adult teeth as they grow), 5 month filters only got 2.2 and new ones Filters reduced it to 0.5. . It seems clear from these results that the fluoride content in the water influences the lifespan of the filters.
