I don't know why they did that, but the bags are made out of fairly fragile, non-stretchable plastic. I understand that it has to resist stretching in order to compress fabrics, but this plastic is so brittle that my first 2 bags were "cracked-torn" in two places just as they were being stacked and moved on a sofa . Packed up and used, it had to be masked off :p. Also, it took about 4 attempts to zip up, including the fact that the zip tabs popped out immediately and were in no way properly aligned along the double zips. I had to glue them on by hand. It's too late to bring her back. :p So they hold a lot, the pump works. but you need to be VERY careful when you pack them and then handle them. Don't put anything in with an edge. One of them had a keyboard in it and it ripped open the bag the first time I picked it up. :(
