Works very well on thick, curly, long hair. It has 3 temperature settings, and the lowest is 380 that I use. I like that the shaft is much larger than most curling irons. It offers strong body and lift but not super tight curls. You can put it on the counter without burning the countertop. The cooling tip helps a lot to avoid finger burns. I didn't use straightening plates. I would give it 5 stars except for the fact that it takes a few minutes to heat up and there is an uncomfortable, faint buzzing coming from the switch area. This makes me fear that it will either shock me, start a fire, or shatter soon. If any of this happens, I'll reconsider.
