I was looking for something to hold my phone on for basic "table down" style product reviews. It's plastic, but it's thick and seems sturdy. The screw part is made of metal. They have a knob that can be loosened or tightened for portrait or landscape orientation. And another one to actually hold the phone. It holds my Pixel 3a perfectly with a case, can open quite wide so should work with most phones. This tripod adapter from itotin got the job done for a good price.
