Review on Vibrant 17930 Outlet Stainless Resonator by Eric Smithlin

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Is it really a resonator or a silencer?

The 17930's that I received appear to be well made, like every Vibrant product I've had my hands on. How they work is a little tricky. I bought a 2011 X5 50i a while ago (Twin Turbo V8) and it had a leaking resonator and I wanted a little more sound so I removed the muffler and put two Vibrant 1792s in place of the muffler based on what I had I've seen other X5 owners. I also added both an X-pipe and an H-pipe to mix the sound of the dual exhausts. To replace the leaking resonators I installed a Vibrant 1141 (Ultra Quiet) and a Vibrant 1792 (big mistake) on each pipe near the motor. This setup sounded great with thundering bass when accelerating and a nice murmur when downshifting and decelerating, but it was too loud most of the time. Not insanely loud, but tons of rumble under load and when cruising down the freeway. Even idling gave me a slight headache, although it didn't sound that loud. I removed the rear Vibrant 1792s and replaced them with 17930s which are much larger and make the sound more civilized again. Almost too civilized. No more hum, but very little coasting noise when decelerating or downshifting. My lady loves being back in the car and no more headaches. I'm planning to replace the front resonators with a pair of Borla XR1 Sportsman mufflers as they are intended to be moderately loud and powerful downpipes so the extra sound with these parts needs to be tamed by the Borlas and 17930 teamwork aggressive sound so I can enjoy music and exhaust at the same time. We'll see once I've made other changes.
