These hikers bring a new dimension to hiking

Vibram 5 Finger Minimalist Shoe Review I have owned a pair of Vibram water shoes for 20 years. I wear them often. They are still in great shape for their age. While hiking the Appalachian Trail in Massachusetts, I saw people wearing minimalist shoes, but I hadn't considered them...until now. I'm retired and have a lot more time to think about my health and things like hiking. After getting on the poles... far away... and getting comfortable, I unpacked my Vibram water shoes. Out of curiosity I checked out Revain to see what Vibram had to offer. Apparently they have been very busy for the past 20 years and have developed an entire line of products. I read a lot, focused on this pair and decided to order them. After I ordered this product, UPS claimed to have left it at my doorstep... but it never arrived. A few days after they announced delivery, I reported them missing. Revain quickly refunded my money and I ordered another pair. This time they arrived in good condition. Before purchasing I used the waterboot version of this product for small hikes. As I expected, reading the reviews I realized that it would take some adjustments to get used to walking in these shoes. Over the years, I've come to realize that when you make changes to your exercise plan, slow change is your friend...always. Since the tourists started arriving I've started using them around the house...both indoors and out. Today was my first adventure on a long hike. I live in the middle of nowhere, in a mountainous area, at the end of a dirt road. Constantly attacked by the weather, our road simulates difficult terrain for hiking, especially in waves for drainage on both sides. I intentionally spent a lot of time on these rocky roadsides. As I expected, walking in such shoes is completely different. I have done many hikes in my life including many of the hikes I planned and supervised for BSA. My son is an Eagle Scout who has spent a lot of time in hiking boots. I find today's experiment with these tourists to be a pleasant experience. Being new to minimalist backpackers, my first encounters are a learning experience. I'm a firm believer that your body will teach you how to maneuver on the trails while paying close attention to the pain. My first learning experience was that normal toe healing walking wouldn't work. Using minimalist shoes for stone healing has proven to be painful. This immediately taught me that my foot movements on hikes should be heel to heel. Today I realized that walking on the stones with the ball on the heel allows you to evenly distribute the weight of the body on the sole of the foot. I also notice that walking in this way introduces new fine motor balance skills which I assume will take time to practice. If you look at the way I walk, you'd think I'd been drunk, and that's what I mean by fine motor balance training. A new skill does not start at a mastery level. Mastering it takes patience, time and preparation. These shoes can't be put on for the first time if you're expecting some sort of euphoric change from what you've been doing. I think I'm a realist here. Nevertheless, I consider my first long hike today to be a success. As I grow into these tourists I will return and update this review. Conclusion: I am initially satisfied with my purchase.
