It's quite strong and twists, so it's not necessary.

Got it as a surprise gift for my boyfriend. To be honest we were both amazed. You can see the gears moving and working through the center of the dial. It's fairly durable and winds up so you don't have to try and hack it to change the batteries in the watch. I think the only thing better than seeing the joy on his face when I give him a present is the happy dance that follows.
