When heated over a cup of water it certainly works faster and works exactly as advertised. The fins at the base add little weight, so the speed advantage on small numbers is negligible. Another benefit I've noticed is that there's a lot less hot air rising to the top of the kettle, so the handle doesn't get hot even when you're heating a full pot. If you're trying to make a quick coffee in the morning, a faster brew time will definitely help.
