I wasn't impressed with this, but may be user error

Maybe I used them wrong, but I followed an artist's technique on the internet of smearing water on your magazine page and then gently clicking pour one small amount of powder and watch the colors show their little fireworks. I did it and it was quite interesting, yes! That was cool. BUT - then the show ended and the paint dried. I had a rough (sandy?) and chalky surface. poof Not very fun or easy to keep a journal, but I managed. Maybe I ordered the wrong version? Gave the product to my 4 year old daughter to drive her crazy and she enjoyed it so much it's ok :).
