Review on BLACKHORSE-RACING 3500 lbs Hand Winch: Heavy Duty Manual Crank Winch with 33FT Cable, Hardened Steel Gears, and Hook for ATV RV Boat Trailer Truck Marine by Marco Cervantes

the gears don't even fit the corresponding axle

Some gears are welded 2 or 3 degrees crooked so they wobble when working. In other words, the gear is not normal or perpendicular to the corresponding axis. The design may be good but the construction is so bad I can't tell. I will return mine. Otherwise I'm quite skeptical about the carrying capacity. This requires 3500 lbs, but all axles, sheet steel, gears, bearings, etc. are the same thickness as the 1500 lb Reese model I'm looking to replace. McMaster-Carr has a better range of "real" winches, albeit much more expensive. UPDATE: I ended up getting one of the Dutton-Lainson worm drive winches. A very simple mechanism inspires much more confidence. With only two moving parts, the chance of failure is much lower.

Pros
  • This is amazing
Cons
  • Some bugs
