I bought this tripod along with its aluminum counterpart (SL-166) to see the weight difference when going from aluminum to carbon fiber. I'm pretty sure it's fake carbon fiber. Holding them both in my hands, I felt no difference. I weighed both on the same scale and the "carbon fiber" barely supplanted the aluminum at 1lb 15.1oz and 2lb 0.6oz respectively. You get just an ounce of weight loss for almost twice the price ($49 vs. $88 at the time of writing). Depending on the quality of aluminum alloy and carbon fiber, a 50% weight reduction can be achieved when changing from aluminum. to carbon fiber. As you can see, you won't get anything close here. Save your money and just buy aluminum. I gave it three stars because it's an overall good mini travel tripod and two stars because it cheated.
