Last fall, a stray cat came to our workshop and refused to leave. A month later and with no response to our ads looking for an owner, we jumped at the chance, spent the money on the veterinary care he needed and "Buster" became our official "shop cat". At night, when we're out, he stays in the shop because his "house manners" aren't quite developed yet. During the day he is allowed to walk back and forth between the shop and the office, which means that the door in between is open all day. After 4 months of this and the problem with the dust in the offices we realized that we needed a way to allow Buster free access between the two areas but not let the dust roll straight into the offices. After doing quite a bit of research I decided to do this and it was the perfect answer to the problem! The door between the shop and the office is hollow, which wasn't a problem as the sides of this 'cat flap' slide open to cover the open area left by the hole cut in the door. It is very stable and durable, even with a hollow door. It was very easy to install. Took about 30 minutes including gathering tools, taking the door off and putting it back on when you're done. (The easiest way to install this is if you can easily remove the door.) We followed the instructions on how high off the ground the cat shelter is. Measured from the floor to the top of the cat's shoulders and added 2 inches. , which in our case meant the top of the cat hatch frame was 14 inches off the ground. This is the ideal height for Buster, allowing him to pass without crouching but without rubbing his stomach too much. I wouldn't go any higher. than that however. I like the magnet on the bottom of the door that keeps the door secure, but it added a little more learning time because the cat needs a little nudge to open. I considered buying a magnet but I'm glad I was a bit more patient while learning and left it alone as the magnet increases the door's ability to close tightly enough to keep dust out as well as the little ones "Bristles" around the edge of the window part of the cat hatch. Buster has quite a long cock and it only took him one time to jam it in the shut off valve so he figured out how to hold his cock properly when he comes over so it doesn't happen again. The "window" itself is made of some kind of heavy plastic, flawlessly TRANSPARENT; heavy and transparent enough to have the benefits of a glass window without the brittleness and safety hazards of glass. I think an unseen window/flap will make training much more difficult. By being able to see through what is on the other side, the cat is more relaxed when walking through, especially in the beginning. It took about half an hour to teach Buster to pass with food and have "his people" on the other side of the door. Both are very strong motivators for this cat, so the training went quickly. However, we do do one thing: when the cat flap is locked at night, we place a "shadow" on the office side of the door that twitches when the flap is closed, so Buster can't see the other side. . At first we thought it would confuse him if he could get through sometimes and not sometimes. shadows below, the door is locked; Shadows up, the door is open. Now we're going to keep doing this for safety as sometimes when Buster is feeling down he'll go through this valve at FULL speed! Something about it seems to add to the enjoyment of every game he plays when he does. Slamming headfirst into that door at full speed and locking it would be PAINFUL, to say the least. Not being here at night we don't know for sure, but we're hoping there was enough time before he ran around that he noticed the curtain was down, meaning the door was closed, and he didn't try to pass it. The valve has a 4 position lock, which is certainly useful in many cases, but that would mean remembering what position the little red button needs to be in to get the desired lock shape. Otherwise you would have to kneel to read. pain for sure! Since the "straight down" setting blocks it in both directions, we only use it. We attached the flap so that the lock was on the side of the office (along with the curtain that we draw at night). The door is brown, the hatch is white, and if I was installing it at home I might consider painting it Krylon paint. Plastic spray paint for better blending. This is normal for a shop and certainly won't look bad at home. It is very small and looks neat. The door is recommended for cats up to 12 pounds. Buster weighs just over 12 pounds, not a fat cat, just strong and muscular. He goes through the door very well with no problems if you ever see him bolt through the store like a bat! I definitely recommend this cat flap.
