Turkey and Cheese for Cats

Purina Pro Plan is a high quality cat food that is typically found in pet shops rather than supermarkets. I bought these 24 packs of Pro Plan Turkey and Cheese Entrees through Revain which I think was a steal. The price of this item has since increased, but it's still a good deal. As far as I can tell, the main attraction of this product for my kitty is the cheese. She loves turkey, but eats foods with cheese, including this turkey and beef with cheese and salmon with cheese, with a particular appetite. It's always nice to see them happy. I also feed my kitten the popular Found Cat Friskies, which is about 25 percent of the cost of the Pro plan. I usually use Friskies Indoor "Homestyle Turkey Dinner" and she is happy with it. Of course, friskies are often criticized for their cheap ingredients and use of fillers. The label comparison shows no big difference to the Pro Plan. The first five ingredients of Pro Plan (after water) are turkey, wheat liver gluten, offal, modified cornstarch, followed by cheese. The first five ingredients in Friskies are turkey, wheat gluten, rice, offal and liver. Pro Plan contains ten percent protein, while Friskies contains 9 percent protein. There doesn't seem to be much of a difference, but sometimes labels can't tell the nature of a product. And different ingredients can be balanced in different ways. The manufacturer is tight-lipped about this, but the Good Guides reviews I rely on give Pro Plan products a high rating, while most Friskies products get a lower rating. None of the products contain grain; But the benefits of grain-free cat food are grossly overstated, in my view. And my kitten doesn't like most grain free wet foods. It depends on what you think you are getting for the money. I tend to think the Pro plan is worth the extra cost, but I have my doubts and regrets. I alternate between Pro Plan and Friskies for turkey in the kitten diet, as well as for other portions like beef. So I benefit from supposedly better food and save a bit at the same time. It's a choice between being on a budget and wanting to treat yourself to a product that could be a little better for the cat. Robin Friedman
