Snug-fitting yet travel-friendly

My 3 year old laptop only has one USB3 port (and only two USB2 ports). So if I need more space I have to use a hub. This hub is too big for travel and hidden behind a monitor, so not very practical. This TP-Link hub allows me to connect more devices, it's quite small and affordable. However, the size of the ports is quite small - it's really difficult to fit most USB devices in them. You almost think you're plugging the cable the wrong way round! And the cable can be about two inches long, so the hub is right above the computer. It's handy when traveling as the cable wraps around the hub, but that's where the convenience ends.
