later This square is offset by about 1/32 inch on the short side. It also has a thick plastic coating, presumably to prevent rust, which is cheap, ugly and very difficult to remove. I understand this square is for construction work, but making a square square should be as easy as making it non-square. Why not make it square at all. I also understand that the finish is meant to be low maintenance but it is lumpy around the edges and when I removed the finish from the edges to make them smooth the finish chipped in places on the flat sides. I plan on keeping it despite the poor quality as I doubt it's worth the hassle of exchanging or looking for a better product from another company but I'm disappointed. Even at this price I expected a lot more from Starrett. Obviously this is not the company they used to be and a product like this reflects badly on them.
