I bought this as an early birthday present for a 2 year old who will be 3 in two weeks (she often wanted to play with MY necklace when I was wearing it). This set is recommended for ages 4 and up, but this little girl had no trouble with it. She didn't seem to know anything about pattern making, but first reached for larger, lighter colored beads for her first necklace. An older child is more likely to "design” necklaces, paying attention to color and pattern consistency. Excitedly, she threaded one after the other until she had threaded all 220 beads onto about 7 of the 9 strands provided. She needed help to tie each strand that we had loose so she could tie it back later. After putting on the first four necklaces with so much joy, she put the next two on her mother and then the last one on herself - so cute! 15 minutes. I was sure the little beads would suit her as she draws squiggles page after page in her notebook, which requires some fine motor skills. I'm glad I have this set. We had no problems with broken beads in this set - it was very good quality. I chose this set because I loved the bright colors and I knew this little girl would love them too.
