Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works fine, but I have concerns.

, So I got this and used it to backup a network folder that I want to update. Transferring the block to the spinning disk worked well. I filled up a 4TB drive pretty quickly and it's great. The concern I have with the device is that there is no ventilation. In the end, during the transfer, I left the case with the drive and regularly felt the hard drive, which was quite warm. I'm concerned about this device because a drive in an enclosure without ventilation will cause the drive's temperature to rise dramatically, either causing the drive to fail completely, or at least reducing the drive's lifespan. I don't have the ability to check the temperature, but I'll consider getting an IR laser thermometer and probably do some temperature testing - both with the cover off and inside the case to see how hot the drive is getting. This may affect the star rating I have given this device. Update: I ran some temperature tests using an on-disk hard drive monitoring application (Western Digital WD4000F9YZ 4TB) with the case turned off and on. I started the tests with a cold drive (at room temperature). I ran a "butterfly read test" to simulate disk actions like performing a backup or restore that I would probably use the disk for. Here are the results in degrees C: Cover Off Temp Cover On Temp0m 25C 25C10m 35C 42C20m 38C 44C30m 40C 46C40m 41C 46C50m 42C 47C60m 42C 47CA As you can see from the numbers, the case increases the temperature by 5 degrees. The software showed the hard drive in a "green" state if the device was used with the case turned off for the entire hour of testing. When using the device with a case, the status changed to "Yellow" when the temperature reached 43 ยฐC. This drive has a nominal working maximum of 55C, which is probably why it was changed to that. Since I let the device run until the temperature remained stable for two consecutive readings (a 20 minute period), during this test I'm not sure if it will get any hotter if I continue after an hour. For now I'll give it a 4 star rating because overall it's definitely a good device and a 10% increase in heat isn't a reason to downgrade my rating. However, if things change and actual usage shows a larger increase in rates, that could change.
