Review on Olympus DS 2300 Digital Voice Recorder by Robert Oner

Excellent audio recorder

It took me a while to get used to the controls. The usefulness of index markers only became apparent when I was recording longer sessions. Index markers let you jump to a section of a recording just as quickly as you jump from one file to another. Likewise, I didn't really understand fast forward and rewind until I worked on longer shots. After a few days I found that the controls were intuitive and easy to use. The automatic volume control works well: I found I could hear all speakers clearly in a meeting in a large room. This control is also good for recording phone calls (using the Radio Shack phone recording controller). The automatic recording control works very well (stops recording on silence). on minimum and on playback, conversations sound normal. The included 16MB XD card has enough space for about 2 hours of standard quality recording. I have a 1GB XD (the smallest available) in a big store in the Bought nearby.Continuous recording, which is equivalent to 5 times the battery life. There is no fast-forward unlike some devices, but fast-forward during playback alternates between skipping 1 second and playing 1 second. The jumps get bigger as FF goes on. It works well and offers almost the same benefit as fast replay. The sound output from the speaker is only satisfactory (volume and quality). The headphone output is excellent. The included software allows you to edit, compress and listen to .t files on your computer and convert from proprietary DSS to .wma and .wav files. I am very happy with the car. I would rate it as excellent.

Pros
  • Backlit LCD display for easy reference
Cons
  • So-so
