I've found that you can use your own modem. I decided to stay with the same brand I rented. The unit I rented was marked Cisco at the point of sale, but when I checked the hardware on my Time Warner account, I found that Scientific-Atlanta said WebSTAR DPC2100. I went ahead and took a chance. The one I got didn't have a Cisco out there. It said Scientific-Atlanta WebSTAR DPC2100, but the model on the page was the same as my rented DPC2100R2 modem. I plugged it into a cable and my PC (by unplugging the router) tried to see what it would do. He downloaded an activation page from Time Warner. The error on the page said it wasn't in the compatibility list even though it was the same modem I rented. I called Time Warner at 1-800 and told them I had a personal modem that I wanted to activate. They asked for a serial number and a MAC address. There are no compatibility list questions. The modem was connected in less than 10 minutes. I added the router back and found it wouldn't work. I turned off the modem and router for 30 seconds. Modem turned on. When it was fully functional, I turned on the router. Now I am leaving a review on Revain. I will recommend. I paid $9.98 to use it. Now I save about $85.20 a year.
