Time is the real test.

I'm reviewing this toilet seat as a Vine reviewer, which means I got the seat in exchange for writing a review. I mention this upfront because some things can only be truly appreciated with time, and a soft-closing toilet seat is one of those things. I can tell you that this seat seems to be of good quality in some ways. It has nice rubber pads on the underside that allow the seat to close silently on the toilet harness - and those rubber pads are essential when the soft-close feature fails, which inevitably happens to everyone. The plastic looks solid, rather thin and cheap. On the negative side, I am to some extent annoyed by the lack of plastic fasteners to attach the seat to the toilet. I prefer plastic nuts and bolts, both because plastic doesn't rust and because it's less likely to overtighten against porcelain and thus crack. The metal thumbscrews on this model hold the seat in place, but they can also rust and be difficult to clean. I would also like this seat to have a rubber pad between the plastic fasteners and the porcelain to provide a small buffer for tightening but more importantly to prevent the hard plastic of the seat from sliding slightly over the porcelain when the seat buckles . But these are subtleties. If the seat's soft closing mechanism works well over time, all is forgiven. Other seats I've had can be adjusted like a screen door to close slowly or quickly. This seat has no visible adjustment mechanism. The slow-closing hinges are in a fully sealed compartment, so I'm not even sure they'll work when there's viscous liquid or some other mechanism inside, as in many cases. I have found that my soft close seats usually fail after three or four years. They're terribly unreliable. And it often happens that the seat closer (in one hinge) fails, but the lid closer (in the other hinge) still works. So people start lowering the lid, thinking that due to the resistance of the seat and lid pair, they will close on their own and let the steam out, causing the seat to fall off with a crash and the lid slowly lowering towards it. When that happens I just adjust the tension of the lid so that it has little to no resistance and also falls freely so people think it's just a regular toilet seat and lower both by hand. However, I'm not sure how I could do that with this seat as its soft close mechanisms are not adjustable. But in the end time will tell. Right now I'm hopeful. I will try to report in the future what time will tell.
