I am convinced that those who give such a bit (miter lock) a bad name simply do not understand how to set it up. To cut grooves in material that is the same thickness as the overall height of the carbide tip, use the entire cutter. Even with a table and a fence. For anything other than adjusting the thickness, you'll need to use a larger cutter for thicker material, or put the cutter deeper into the table and guide for thinner material. Unless you plan your entire tooling to the exact dimensions for your drill, you need to understand the geometry of that drill and how to properly tune it to your needs. It may be too much for those who can't understand this beat the first time. But if you study the function of this design you will see how much of the bat needs to be in contact with the board and you will have a great connection! Just make sure you have the right drill bit for the thickness of your wood and do yourself a favor by joining all the pieces to the same thickness so you can cut both boards at the same nominal value.
