Purchased for removing excess charcoal and smoothing boards using the Sugi-Ban method. I use a wire brush (from a port freight) on a broomstick to remove most of the burnt wood. Every other spindle I've looked at had bad reviews so I made my own and it's EASY! and wow cheaper. I have a 12" rod with a 1/2" thread (found at any hardware store or hardware store), some leftover bearings (you can get them from Revain - just look for a 1/2" bearing ), some nuts. and washers and some scraps of PVC pipe. The 1/2" fully threaded might seem like an overkill, but the nuts fit the brush with only minor adjustments, and I'd rather rework than break it. I put in the bearings and secured them with nuts on each side. I cut the PVC pipe long enough to cover the bearings, then cut it lengthwise into 4 sections and lay it on top of the bearings, use double sided tape to temporarily secure it, then tape it in place. Then put the nut and then the washer on the long threaded end - this is where the end of the brush sits. The 2 nuts that prevent the brush from rotating need to be filed or ground. If installing the nut on a flat surface, the 3 and 9 o'clock points will need to be reduced (about 1/8 inch on each side). This way they slide into the core of the brush. A snug fit is best, so don't go crazy filing or sanding them. About 1/4 inch on each side in the brush. When you put the 2 nuts on they should line up/install in the same way. Simply place the entire unit on a flat surface and tack down with oven mitts or add red caulk and allow to dry for 24 hours. Now you have a handle with a nut, a washer followed by 2 nuts permanently secured (see picture). Now put the brush on and fix the brush with washer, lock washer and nut. I left about 1.5" of extra edge for a drill to attach. I use a cordless drill set on lo/slow and it works great. Slow enough that you don't overload the area, but with plenty of torque. The grit 120 leaves a very smooth finish - that was my biggest concern It has to last a lifetime Solid Threaded Rod 8--1/2" Nuts 2--1/2" Flat Washers 1--1/2" Lock Washer PVC -Pipe scrap duck cone bend (if not welded)
