The mug itself is made out of the plastic you would get if you bought reusable summer beverage mugs at Walmart. You can't keep a hot cup of coffee sleeveless. I love the hard plastic lid. Be very careful when sealing the cup with a lid. Use a flat surface. The lid snaps firmly (which is good) but not lightly and can easily spill. I would not recommend this mug to anyone who has trouble removing lids from jars. There is no plastic smell from either the cup or the lid. After rinsing in the dishwasher, there is a slight plastic smell that dissipates in the fresh air. Edit: 9/26/21 I use these mugs almost daily, mostly with hot coffee, and put them in the dishwasher after one use. Cups below and lids above. They are still clean with no stains, rips or chips. I also use it for cold drinks. I added one more star. Also, the plastic is better than the Walmart mug which has been tried and tested for 3 years.
