Review on πŸ“€ Toshiba SD-V296 DVD Player/VCR Combo: Progressive Scan, Dolby Digital, Remote Control (Black) by George Miller

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good, but questionable reliability.

I bought one of the original Toshiba DVDs (paid about $300) in the early 90's, great machine. It was still working when I replaced it about 10 years ago just because the old Toshiba couldn't play DVD-R. I bought this unit about 3-4 years ago for my mother in law who spent most of the 80's and early 90's recording classic TV movies. (She has more movies on tape than MGM's vault! :-) About two months ago she called me and complained that a CD was stuck in her car. When I checked, she was right. The car refused to eject the DVD and I couldn't help but disassemble the car to get it out. Given my experience with the original Toshiba, I was surprised that this machine didn't last very long. With prices this low the only option was a replacement so I replaced her car with the same model due to the price and the fact that she was familiar with that model and didn't have to go through a new learning curve. This machine is identical to their old one, didn't even have to replace the remote control. So, the main nuance here is that this machine may not last very long (3-4 years?). To reiterate what others have said, this isn't a machine you plug into a high-end system and expect cinema quality. If you need something simple to play VHS tapes, this device will get the job done for a very small cost but may not last very long.

Pros
  • Electronics
Cons
  • Expensive
