Review on Nexus 70Mm Real Silent Case by Jeffrey Dunn

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good fan, but I would still avoid it.

Looks like a good fan, so far (15 minutes) it's really very quiet. But I would never buy it again, at least not until Nexus supplies installation screws. As mentioned, this fan is about 1" thick, so there's a good chance your original screws aren't long enough. No problem, I thought, I'll just buy longer screws. An extra drive to the Home Depot but I'm lucky it's close by and I go there often anyway. Ha! Good luck finding #4 x 1.25" metal screws! The longest is 1" and it won't fit. So, taking another reviewer's advice, I drilled the top holes just enough for a thin screwdriver to go through, and while that works, it turns a simple 5 minute solution into a miserable 30 minute project. The problem is getting the screws into the bottom holes and leaving them just enough to pry with a #7 Phillips screwdriver 1. If you enlarge the holes, you still don't have enough space to insert the screwdriver straight and more at an angle to tighten a screw that is at an angle. If you buy this fan, I have three suggestions.(1 ) It would be easier if you had a #1 Philips screwdriver with a magnetized tip - I didn't have one small enough (2) Instead of making the top holes bigger if you have a dremel, cut e simply peel off the tab; In hindsight I think it could have made access much easier. (3) In my case, the fan is screwed into a plastic plate that snaps onto an aluminum heatsink. When I tightened the penultimate screw (which was now too long) I found that the plastic sheet could be easily removed so I could finish the build off the computer. No more digging loose screws out of the MoBo case! That's because the Nexus is too cheap to include four screws, which can add pennies to the cost! Grrr!
